Roberto De Zerbi Signals Long-Term Marseille Commitment, Clouding Manchester United’s Manager Search

Manchester United’s search for a permanent head coach has encountered a significant hurdle, as top candidate Roberto De Zerbi has strongly indicated he plans to remain with Olympique de Marseille for the foreseeable future.

Since dismissing Erik ten Hag in early January, United’s new football leadership under INEOS has adopted a measured approach, appointing club legend Michael Carrick as interim manager until the season’s end. While Carrick auditions for the role permanently, the club’s hierarchy has been assessing a shortlist of potential successors, with the Italian tactician long considered a prime target.

However, De Zerbi’s recent comments have poured cold water on any prospective move to Old Trafford. Speaking after Marseille’s midweek Champions League exit, the 46-year-old was unequivocal about his future.

“There is nothing to confirm,” De Zerbi stated when questioned about speculation linking him to the club. “I was manager of Marseille, and I still am now.”

He further solidified his stance by outlining a long-term vision for his project in France: “I believe I have the capacity to stay at Marseille for six or seven seasons—that is not in question. What frustrates me is the defeat. This isn’t about passion, but a feeling of powerlessness after losing in that manner.”

These declarations suggest De Zerbi has effectively removed himself from United’s managerial equation. His commitment aligns with the ambitious project he has begun at Marseille, making a summer departure appear increasingly unlikely.

For INEOS, this clarifies one aspect of a complex search. The focus must now shift to other identified candidates. While Michael Carrick remains under consideration, external options such as Thomas Tuchel and Oliver Glasner are also under review, ensuring the club retains a robust shortlist.

De Zerbi’s decision underscores a broader trend of elite managers seeking stable, long-term projects, posing a fresh challenge for United as they look to re-establish their footing among football’s elite.
