Tactical Nod to City Performance Sees Key Duo Retained

Carrick has kept faith with the wide pairing that proved so effective against City. Patrick Dorgu and Amad Diallo get the nod again, meaning Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha start from the bench. The decision sees Bryan Mbeumo continue as the central striker.

There had been internal debate about recalling Sesko to add aerial presence against Arsenal’s physically robust backline, a tactic that would have shifted Mbeumo to a wing. Speaking on Friday, Carrick acknowledged the need for flexibility, stating, “certain games will have different styles,” but his selection today emphasises pace and mobility in transition.

Defensive Stability Maintained

Despite Noussair Mazraoui returning from AFCON duty, Diogo Dalot retains his place at right-back, a reward for his recent solid form. The centre-back partnership of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez remains intact, shielded by the experienced Casemiro. It was confirmed this week that the Brazilian, whose contract expires this summer, will depart the club after this season.

Midfield Maestro and Attacking Captain

The burgeoning midfield partnership of Casemiro and the outstanding Kobbie Mainoo continues, providing a blend of defensive grit and progressive ball-carrying. Ahead of them, captain Bruno Fernandes will operate in his familiar No. 10 role, tasked with linking play and supplying the forward line.

Injury & Availability Update

Carrick confirmed the squad is “in a really good place” physically and mentally. Shea Lacey is back in the matchday squad after serving a suspension. However, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee remain sidelined with injuries.

“The boys are in a really good place, off the back of last week,” Carrick said. “It was a big, emotional day, physically and mentally, and a big lift. They came through it really well… We’re looking forward to a real challenge, one we’re going down to face head on.”
